Tipene, Qualified Vinyl and Carpet Layer

Tipene, Qualified Vinyl and Carpet Layer

TIPENE

Before going to RTE Tipene had been on the benefit, had tried going to three different providers and was employed in a couple of short term jobs, all of which didn’t work out for him. He was looking for a building construction programme that he would feel comfortable at and would help build his confidence and get him into the workforce. After seeing RTE advertised at Work and Income he enrolled and once attending classes immediately felt comfortable and welcomed by all staff.

“The staff get you to believe in your dreams no matter how far-fetched. They encouraged me to go for it (when I got my job opportunity) and to do my best. They build up your confidence cause when you’ve been rejected time and time again (when on the benefit) it has an effect on you but RTE help you to believe in yourself again.”

Tipene has now completed an apprenticeship and is a qualified Vinyl and Carpet Layer at RML subcontractor Spencer Flooring. In the future, he is looking to become self-employed.

Tamati, Registered Electrician

Tamati, Registered Electrician

Tamati

Tamati started at Responsive Trade Education after pulling out of school. Tamati heard about RTE through a neighbour whose house had burnt down, and her children had been shown great support during this time when they attended RTE.

“School didn’t work out for me. Getting to RTE I really liked the hands-on learning, the practical projects and small classes. It was a cool learning experience where I learnt good skills and I wouldn’t be where I am now without RTE. I’m now a qualified electrician, have got a work van and am part of a small tight knit team”.

The environment at RTE allowed Tamati to excel and he became the first ever student within RTE to complete not one but two certificates, receiving his NC BCATS Level 2 and NCEA Level 2. RTE staff found a placement for him at Voltz Electrical (RML Subcontractor) where after 3.5 years and challenging hurdles around the written components he has successfully completed his electrical apprenticeship and has recently become a registered electrician.

Tamati has now been with Voltz for 6 years and looks forward to giving back to the community he grew up in and assisting the customers of Housing New Zealand.
